Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
Exploring Computer Science is designed to introduce students to the breadth of the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics.
Rather than focusing the entire course on learning particular software tools or programming languages, the course is designed to focus the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. The goal of Exploring Computer Science is to develop in students the computational thinking practices of algorithm development, problem solving and programming within the context of problems that are relevant to the lives of today’s students.
Assessment of Progress
Assessing the progress of conceptional learning of coding sounds harder than it is. Students seem to make a connection a point and begin to build their own code at which time it becomes easy to assess their understanding as they are typically explaining it to you. As a parent or anyone outside the classroom, you can ask the student and they can almost always accurately self access.
That being said, there are check points:
3-Differing between Event and Action
Materials will be provided: computer, internet access, research options
Focusing on conceptual ideas and solving problems is primarily accomplished through classroom and small group discussions, after which an application of the discussion is testing through a coding implemented at the individual level. It is very important to stay involved in the group discussion to prepare yourself to complete the individual application.
