On November 13, 2015 we had an author visit at Independence High School.  Tye Dye wearing Johnny Worthen is a Utah writer who has published several novels and been chosen as Writer of the Year by the Guild of Utah Writers.  Included in his books are two Young Adult books Eleanor and Celeste.  Eleanor won the Novel of the Year for Young Adult books in Utah.  During his visit, Mr. Worthen gave presentations to some of our classes and then ran a writers workshop for a small group of the students in the Library.  During the workshop, students learned the basics of plot development and how to build tension.  The students also had the opportunity to define characters and conflicts and then worked in groups to outline their own story.  Those who attended were entertained and were provided with new tools they can use in improving their writing skills. Lunch for the workshop participants was graciously provided by Costa Vida.
